Persepolis

Persepolis is an animation movie based on the graphic novel of the same name. It was created by Marjene Satrapi, directed by Vincent Paronnaud and produced by Xavier Rigault and Marc-Antoine Robert. This movie won the Jury Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and the Special Jury Award at the Cinemanila International Film Festival. Also, it was selected to be the inaugural movie at the Film Festival of Valladolid (Spain). Persepolis revolves around Marjene, a girl who lives with a westernized family in Iran during the 70's. During this period in which the Sha regime ruled Iran, countless cases of abuse of authority occurred. So, this situation makes Marjene have political left wing ideas. After the fall of the Sha regime, the revolution in Iran came. This event makes Marjene´s life and Iran in general, change radically. This story starts when the fundamentalists take power in an authoritarian manner and so, the Islamic Revolution breaks out. During this period the women are forced to wear a veil and thousands of people are incarcerated. Marjene is excited about the latest trends that are going on in the Western hemisphere (punk rock,Michael Jackson, etc.) while suffering the horror of the political persecution in her country. When she becomes a teenager, she is sent to a French School. There, she becomes a witness of the events that took place during those years in Iran. Meanwhile , Iran is devastated because of rising fundamentalism and the war against Irak.
