Gake no Ue no Ponyo revolves around a city by the sea in which Sosuke, a five-year old child, lives. Sosuke rescues a little red fish which he calls Ponyo from a cliff littered with debris. So strong was the friendship between Ponyo and Sosuke that Ponyo wants to become a human being.
The movie is greatly inspired by some watercolors and drawings that Miyazaki made before the film production.
The storyline for Ponyo follows the necessity of equilibrium between humans and their environment and our need for friendship between ourselves.
